Abilis Investigates Suspected Misuse of Funds in Tanzania

The Abilis Foundation has filed a request for investigation with the Tanzanian authorities regarding suspected misuse of funds in our Tanzania country programme. An investigation is currently underway, in which the Foundation is a party affected. We cannot comment on the details of the investigation.

The Foundation has suspended all payments to the Tanzania country programme, informed the Ministry for Foreign Affairs in Finland as the funding body, and notified the Tanzanian authorities. The foundation has also commissioned an independent special audit. At the same time, we are looking into how the suspected misuse of funds was possible and reviewing our internal processes.

The investigation into the suspected misuse of funds in Abilis Foundation's Tanzania country program continues in cooperation with the authorities.

Based on current information, the suspected misuse involves tens of thousands of euros. The first suspected misuses are estimated to have occurred in 2020. The exact scope and details will become clear as the ongoing investigation progresses.

The suspicion came to light through Abilis's reporting channel. During the follow-up, documents were found at the Tanzania country office, based on which the authenticity of some of the organizations reported as having received funding is currently being investigated.

Due to the ongoing nature of the investigation, Abilis does not comment on the details of the case or possible questions of responsibility at this stage. We will provide more information as the investigation allows.
